Hurricane Season Runs June 1 to November 30. What It Means for a Maui Booking

The Central Pacific hurricane season opens 1 June and closes 30 November. On Maui that covers most of the warm-water calendar, and the practical risk clusters in the back half of it rather than spreading evenly.

What actually happens here

A direct hurricane landfall on Maui is rare. What is not rare is a system passing to the south or southeast and sending a long period of high surf onto the south-facing shores, heavy rain onto the windward side, and gusty conditions across the isthmus.

The visible effects for a visitor are usually: boat trips cancelled, south shore beaches closed to swimming, the Hāna road closed by rockfall or flooding, and flight schedules disrupted for a day or two either side.

What this changes about booking

• Book refundable where the price difference is reasonable, and read the accommodation's storm clause before paying. The trigger is usually a named-storm warning or an official order, not "bad weather".
• Travel insurance bought after a storm has been named is generally worthless for that storm. If you want it, buy it at the time of booking.
• Book boat trips early in your stay rather than on the last day, so a weather cancellation leaves room to rebook.
• September and October are statistically the most active months and also among the better-value ones on Maui, with warm water and thinner crowds. That is a real trade-off. Make it deliberately.
