Getting to Maui

• Kahului AirportOGG

  Maui's only real airport and the one almost everybody uses. It sits on the isthmus between the two mountains, which is why the drive to anywhere scenic starts at twenty minutes and goes up from there: roughly thirty-five minutes to Wailea, an hour to Kāʻanapali, two hours up to the Haleakalā summit and two and a half to Hāna. Direct service arrives from the US mainland, Canada and the other islands. The rental-car centre is off-airport and reached by a shuttle from the kerb, so build fifteen to twenty minutes into your arrival before you are actually driving.

• Kapalua–West Maui AirportJHM

  25 mi · about 45 min by road

  A single short strip above Kāʻanapali serving small interisland turboprops. It puts you ten minutes from the Nāpili and Kapalua hotels instead of an hour from Kahului, which is the entire argument for it. Carriers and schedules on this route have changed repeatedly in recent years and the aircraft are nine to fifteen seats, so confirm who is actually flying it before you build a connection around it.

• Hāna AirportHNM

  A single runway on the east coast, a few minutes north of Hāna town. Commercial service is limited and intermittent; charters are the more reliable option. Worth investigating for one specific reason: flying one leg of the Hāna trip and driving the other turns three hours of continuous curves into ninety minutes, which is a real answer for anyone prone to motion sickness or travelling with small children.

• Māʻalaea Harbor

  Not a ferry terminal but the island's busiest tour harbour, on the isthmus coast roughly twenty minutes from Kahului and ten from Kīhei. Most Molokini snorkel boats and a large share of the winter whale trips leave from here because it is the closest harbour to the crater. It is also one of the windiest spots on Maui by early afternoon, which is the practical reason morning departures are the good ones.

• Lahaina Harbor

  West Maui's small boat harbour, badly damaged in the August 2023 fire and reopened only in stages since. A limited number of licensed commercial operators are back in the water, with whale-watching and some snorkel and sailing departures running again, and more added as approvals and dock repairs allow. Because the picture is still changing, confirm your departure harbour with the operator rather than assuming it from an older listing.

• Māla Wharf and Kīhei boat ramp

  Two smaller launch points that matter more than their size suggests. Māla Wharf on the west side and the ramp at Kīhei are where a number of raft, dive and small-group snorkel operators put in, often with a shorter run to the reef than the big harbours. Expect a car park and a ramp rather than a terminal, and read your confirmation email for the meeting point.

• Kahului Harbor

  Maui's commercial deep-water port and its cruise call. Ships tie up alongside a working harbour next to the fuel tanks and the container yard, not a promenade, so every cruise day on Maui begins with a shuttle or a coach out of an industrial area. Port calls are typically a single day, which is not enough time for both the Hāna road and the summit. Choose one.

• Lānaʻi passenger ferry

  The one scheduled inter-island boat from Maui. Passenger ferries cross from Lahaina Harbor to Mānele Harbor on Lānaʻi in about an hour, several times a day, carrying people and bags but no vehicles. Sailings and the Lahaina-side arrangements have been disrupted since the fire, so check the operator's current timetable before planning a day around it, and book ground transport on the Lānaʻi side in advance.

• Molokaʻi

  Listed here only to correct a common assumption: there is no scheduled passenger ferry between Maui and Molokaʻi. The service that once ran between Lahaina and Kaunakakai has not operated for years. Molokaʻi is reached from Kahului by small commuter aircraft, and it is a quiet, deliberately undeveloped island that asks visitors to arrive on its terms rather than as a day trip.
